How to Maximize Your Score
Why This Scoring System Matters
This scoring system is designed to be:
- Transparent: You know exactly how your score is calculated—there's no mystery or subjectivity
- Fair: Everyone is evaluated using the same scale and methodology
- Balanced: Your score reflects both what you achieve (outcomes) and how you achieve it (competencies)
- Actionable: You can see exactly where you're strong and where you need to improve
- Motivating: The system rewards consistent excellence and provides clear targets to aim for
How to Maximize Your Score
Now that you understand how scoring works, here are practical tips to help you achieve the highest possible rating:
- Focus on consistency
Notice that the scoring scale is based on frequency—how often you demonstrate a behavior or achieve an outcome. To score high, you need to be consistent. Occasional excellence isn't enough; you need to deliver reliably day in and day out.
- Prioritize Key Outcomes
Since Key Outcomes carry the most weight (50%), this is where you should focus the majority of your effort. Make sure you're crystal clear on what outcomes are expected and track your progress regularly.
- Don't neglect competencies
While Key Outcomes matter most, competencies still make up 50% of your score combined. Even if you deliver great results, poor behavior or lack of skills can drag your overall score down.
- Document your achievements
Keep a running record of your accomplishments, positive feedback, and examples of when you demonstrated key competencies. This evidence will be invaluable during your performance review.
- Ask for feedback regularly
Don't wait until your annual review to find out where you stand. Ask your manager for feedback throughout the year so you can course-correct if needed.
- Understand what "Always" looks like
To score a 5 (Always), you need to demonstrate that behavior or outcome virtually 100% of the time. Ask your manager for specific examples of what "always" looks like for each competency and outcome.
- Aim for "Good" as your baseline, "Excellent" as your stretch goal
A "Good" rating (3.51 - 4.50) means you're meeting expectations consistently—that's the standard you should aim to maintain at minimum. If you want to stand out, aim for "Excellent" (4.51 - 5.00), which requires consistently exceeding expectations.
